Application Guidelines

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply, organizations must comply with the following:

  • Be recognized as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.
  • Serve communities located in Essex, Hudson, Passaic, or Union counties in New Jersey, or anywhere in the state of Vermont. Funding requests for projects outside these areas will not be considered.
  • Have not submitted an application within the previous 12 months. Organizations must wait one full year before reapplying, regardless of whether their previous application was approved or denied.
  • Organizations applying for the first time, or those that have not received a grant through the Turrell Fund’s regular cycle application process* within the past five years, must submit a Letter of Inquiry (LOI) before submitting a full grant application.

Letter of Inquiry

Organizations applying for the first time, or those that have not received a grant through the Turrell Fund’s regular cycle application process* within the past five years, must submit a Letter of Inquiry (LOI) before submitting a full grant application.

*Cycle Grants are distinct from discretionary grants (such as President’s Grants or Innovation Grants). To be eligible for a Cycle Grant, you must have submitted a formal application during either the January or July application cycle. Discretionary grants do not require a formal application.

(If you are not sure if you’ve received a Cycle Grant, please email application@turrellfund.org)

The LOI introduces your organization and/or proposed project, allowing the Turrell Fund to assess whether your proposal aligns with our funding priorities before inviting a full application.

Required Information

The following documents need to accompany a grant application.

  1. IRS determination letter
    • A copy of your organization’s IRS tax-exempt determination letter.
    • It should confirm your 501(c)(3) status and indicate your classification under 509(a)(1), 509(a)(2), or 509(a)(3).
  2. Most recent Form 990
  3. Operating budget for the coming year
  4. Board of Directors list, including their professional or organizational affiliations.

(Nonprofits in New Jersey with an annual budget of $1,000,000 or more are required by the state   to obtain an external financial audit.

Vermont does not require nonprofits to obtain an external financial audit.

If your organization is not required to conduct an external audit, the Turrell Fund does not require you to submit audited financial statements or a management letter as part of your application.)
